US Congress takes step toward giving baby Charlie Gard residency

Pro-life Congressmen gave Charlie Gard new hope this week when they granted the British infant and his parents permanent residence in the United States.

Gard and his family have been at the center of an worldwide debate over whether governments can make life and death decisions for individuals.

Congress' offer of permanent residency would be similar to Charlie holding dual citizenship and would still make him subject to British law.

A team of specialists including the United States doctor offering to treat Charlie Gard have met Great Ormond Street medics to discuss the baby's care.

Charlie's parents' pleas have even grabbed the attention of Pope Francis, who extended his support to the family, and President Donald Trump, who tweeted, "If we can help little Charlie Gard, we would be delighted to do so". "He's even trying to move his hips", Estopinan said.

It's unclear whether the U.S. Congress' move will result in the family going to the U.S. for treatment, since British courts have refused permission for the child to be moved. When speaking Thursday to Francis, Hirano claimed Gard had "an 11% to 56% chance of clinically meaningful improvement" with nucleoside bypass therapy, according to Mirror. A judge is now reviewing Charlie's case, and is expected to give his ruling next week. He is a specialist in treating Charlie's rare mutation of mitochondrial depletion syndrome.

On Monday, Hirano flew to London to examine Charlie and examine his brain scans.

However, Dr. Michio Hirano, MD, a Harvard-trained neurologist, examined Charlie this week to provide his opinion about experimental treatment.

Charlie's mother recently met two worldwide experts at to discuss the 11-month-old's condition. We are at his bedside and feel satisfied he is not suffering or in any pain. Conservatives view Charlie's situation as proof that a single-player, government-funded healthcare initiative would lead to hospitals euthanizing American children.

Hirano, along with the rest of the team of medical experts examining Gard, will present findings on how much Gard could be helped by treatment to the U.K. High Court after the two-day examination. The hospital has said that Charlie is terminally ill and is seeking to remove his life support so he can "die with dignity".

Ms Yates said last night that Charlie was set to undergo more tests.

Tensions also arose between GOSH doctors and Gard's parents over the size of the baby's head - an increase in brain size (which hospital measurements dispute but Yates insists her own measurements support) could indicate brain development.

Any legal eagles on the other side of the pond know the consequences of Gard and his parents being granted LPR status here vis-a-vis the family's right to take him to the US for treatment?

"For the objective of this visit, this gives them the same status as our own clinicians and allows them both to examine the patient and to have full access to our records and facilities", a statement said.
