Celtic's Leigh Griffiths charged by Uefa with 'provoking spectators' after Linfield game

Stephen Lowry

Celtic fans" display of "paramiltary' banners during the Champions League match against Linfield has prompted a call for the club to "lance the boil" in respect of fans who celebrate terrorists.

That yellow card took the Hoops" tally to five for the match and Uefa have also charged Celtic with "improper conduct of the team'.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers used the opportunity to hand new signing Olivier Ntcham his competitive debut for the club, with the French midfielder starting in midfield.

Scott Sinclair bagged a double as Celtic eased to a 4-0 win over Linfield in the second leg of their Champions League second round qualifier to seal a 6-0 aggregate victory. "We know that the Celtic support will join us in condemning such behaviour".

With Celtic founded by Irish Catholic immigrants in Glasgow and Linfield a historically Protestant club in Northern Ireland, there were sure to be tensions on and off the pitch, and the match was nearly a subplot in the much larger story of politics and religion in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Hosts Linfield were charged on that occasion for objects being thrown from the crowd and a field invasion by supporters.

He added: "Celtic must do more than just issue criticisms of the fans".

The club say they have already launched an investigation.

In a statement, Celtic condemned the behaviour leading to the charges.

Griffiths tied a Celtic scarf to a goalpost after the final whistle in Friday's game.

This case will be dealt with by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body on July 20.

Around 1,500 Linfield fans travelled from Belfast to watch this evening's game as police urged supporters to "focus on the football" and brought in additional officers to Celtic's home city to assist supporters.
