More contract extensions may be coming for Vikings defenders

EDEN PRAIRIE MN- JUNE 14 Minnesota Vikings cornerback Xavier Rhodes has a laugh during Minnesota Vikings Minicamp

Schefter reported the six-year deal is worth $78.126 million with $41 million guaranteed, while Rapoport noted the contract is a five-year extension, with the added years worth $70 million.

Along with Harrison Smith, Rhodes is the Vikings' most important defensive back. And even though head coach Mike Zimmer has said he doesn't like a cornerback shadowing a top receiver, he has repeatedly trusted the 27-year-old Rhodes to do so. "He always told me, 'You know, I'm going to work you hard until you're the best corner in the league.' He trusted in me, and to this day I really thank him". Rhodes provided us with a little look in.

"It is [important] for us because we like to lock guys up, and I think a year ago he showed that he could go against some of the better receivers and do a good job", Zimmer said. "His completion rate of 48 percent was the second-lowest among cornerbacks, allowing only 36 of the 75 passes thrown in his direction to be caught". "Just trying to be the great defense, the Vikings defense we've been for the past three or four years". This is another strategic plan that we put in place this offseason, knowing how many young guys we want to keep.

The Vikings announced Sunday that they have signed cornerback Xavier Rhodes to a contract extension. Zimmer has built a once-mediocre defense into an elite unit, which makes it vital that they retain as many players as possible.

Rhodes also is planning for the future.

It wasn't just Rhodes that was excited about the new contract.
