Ronaldo in court to face allegations of tax evasion

La Liga Chief on Neymar: 'I'd be more worried if Ronaldo or Messi left'

As reported by Ian Sullivan and Joseph Wilson of the Associated Press (h/t Bloomberg), Ronaldo spent 90 minutes answering questions from investigating judge Monica Gomez.

The hearing at Pozuelo de Alarcon, in the outskirts of Madrid, was closed to the public as it is part of an ongoing investigation. A big crowd of media waited outside on the courthouse steps, and a lectern and speakers were set up, but Ronaldo left without speaking.

Having dismissed the notion that Neymar's departure would act as a significant blow for the top division of Spanish football, Tebas went on to reveal that he plans to report PSG to FIFA, whether they decide to pay Neymar's release clause or not.

Ronaldo appears in court on Monday, accused of evading 14.7 million euros ($17.2 million) in tax.

Last month, a prosecutor said the Portugal forward of had used shell companies outside Spain to hide income made from image rights. It added that Ronaldo falsely claimed the income as coming from real estate, which "greatly" reduced his tax rate.

As the complaint Ronaldo is facing is much greater than Messi's, there have been suggestions he faces as much as seven years behind bars. He fired Madrid to another UEFA Champions League title-their third in four seasons-as well as the La Liga crown. Mourinho, now coach of Manchester United, has yet to be summoned for questioning and through his agent has denied any wrongdoing.

Ronaldo is the latest in a string of footballers to be pursued by the Spanish tax authorities.

Ronaldo who is ranked as the world's highest paid athlete by Forbes Magazine is the latest player to fall foul of Spain's taxman; after the likes of Barcelona forward Lionel Messi, who was found guilty of the offence previous year.

That said, the judge could deem the circumstances to be extenuating, and as per a law introduced in 2013, reduce the sentence by half, or to a quarter, if Ronaldo pays the €14.7m plus a fine and interest.

It is alleged by prosecutors that the Real Madrid forward has evaded £13.1million since 2010. However, he did not spend time behind bars due to a Spanish legal convention that tends to allow first time, non-violent offenders with less than a two-year conviction, to remain free.
