Stephen Curry at Ellie Mae Classic, Round 2

What should Steph Curry expect? Mark Rypien recalls his PGA Tour experience Harry How Allsport

Basketball star Steph Curry called out a PGA Tour pro who said there was "no chance in hell" he'd break 76 on his Web.com Tour debut after shooting 74.

Curry, of the National Basketball Association champions Golden State Warriors, carded a four-over 74, not quite a Jordan Spieth-like performance, but enough to finish the first round ahead of several professionals at the Ellie Mae Classic in Hayward, California.

Curry, who munched on a breakfast sandwich at the green of his first hole, missed badly on his initial ball of the day, landing his tee shot off a hill that kicked it perfectly into the cup holder of a golf cart.

West, who's a very good golfer himself - a 3.8 handicap index - said he wasn't surprised that Curry played so well down the stretch of both days based on all the money he's taken from him when the shots mattered most.

Many PGA Tour players of past and present were supportive of Curry's efforts, but the 29-year-old was also criticised for taking up a place in the field, amid fears he could be out of his depth. I know for a fact he was the happiest person at TPC Stonebrae this week getting to watch me tee it up on this stage.

He finally sank his first birdie on 14 and then got another on 17, before finishing with a bogey on the par four 18th.

'To shoot two 74s, I'll take that.

Here's what people had to say of the performance, including some impressed professional golfers. It could have been those 80, 90 talks I heard going into the tournament.

Was it flawless? Of course not, but it's exactly what we should have hoped to see. Obviously as a competitor, you feel like you can always play better.
