Eng vs SA: Hosts win by 177 runs, secure series 3-1

Gibson sharing a joke with Joe Root is highly rated by England

The irrepressible Moeen Ali proved South Africa's primary scourge once again as England wrapped up a 3-1 series success with a 177-run win in the fourth Test at Old Trafford.

Ali struck a fiery 75 not out from 66 balls helped England set South Africa a victory target of 380 at Old Trafford before his fourth five-wicket haul in Tests skittled the Proteas for 202.

Dean Elgar's drop of Moeen, at slip off Maharaj, was the worst of the lot given the match situation and the fact he actually had the ball in his grasp before rolling over and then releasing it. Ali, who bats left-handed, was especially severe on Maharaj, hitting him for three sixes.

England had made their own heavy weather of batting on a pitch earlier in the day which made Moeen's nonchalant intervention all the more creditable.

But with South Africa 163 for three, Amla missed an intended whip shot off Ali and was lbw, although England, for the second time on Monday, had to first review umpire Kumar Dharmasena's original not out decision.

Anderson certainly enjoyed the chance to bowl from the newly-named "James Anderson End" at his home ground - with all of his wickets coming from there.

England's advantage in the final test was built on its 136-run first-innings advantage.

After lunch, England opener Keaton Jennings, who has struggled throughout the series and was badly in need of a good score, departed for 18, making a mess of a short delivery from Rabada to give Hashim Amla a simple catch at first slip.

The result takes England into number three in the ICC Test world rankings, above rivals Australia ahead of the Ashes this winter and ahead of their second series of the summer against the West Indies, starting next Thursday [17 August] at Edgbaston in the first day-night match to be staged in the United Kingdom.

England added just 19 runs to their overnight total of 224-8 in their second innings to be all out for 243, but the damage had already been done.

This was turning into a fine spell by Olivier, whose two wickets for four runs in eight balls threatened to put the contest back in the balance.

Olivier, who took an impressive 3-38, insisted South Africa could yet achieve a remarkable win.

"We've put pressure on them and the match has turned our way", said Moeen.

"A few more runs tomorrow and I hope we can bat them out of the game". "I was desperately disappointed not to chalk up another hundred in Test cricket".
