Former Baseball Star Don Baylor Dead at 68

Don Baylor, former Yankee, AL MVP and Mets coach, dies at 68 after battle with cancer

- Former Chicago Cubs manager Don Baylor died Monday morning after a lengthy battle with multiple myeloma, according to reports.

Don Baylor, the 1979 American League MVP and 1987 World Series Champion, died Monday of cancer.

Baylor, who played for the Orioles, Athletics, Angels, Yankees, Red Sox and Twins, finished with a.260 batting average with 338 home runs and 1,276 RBIs.

After his stint as a major league star, Baylor went on to manage the Colorado Rockies, and was named National League Manager of the Year. While remaining in Colorado for six seasons before heading to the "Windy City" for another three go-rounds, he produced an overall record of 627-689 while at the helm.

Not all of his records were great for Baylor; at the time of his retirement, he had been hit by pitches a then-record 267 times.

Baylor got his World Series ring with the Twins in 1987, proving that nice guys do finish first on occasion.

He played with the Phillies nearly his entire career until spending his final 52 games with the Florida Marlins in 1997, helping them win a World Series title.

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of former Yankee Don Baylor".

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Becky and the entire Baylor family", Rockies Owner/Chairman and CEO Dick Monfort said in a statement from the team. He served as a coach for various teams until 2015, ending with the Angels.

He played the entire 2009-10 season despite being unable to shoot free throws right-handed, and having, as his coach Bob Huggins put it to the New York Times, "no chance to shoot a jump shot".

The Rockies make their first visit to Progressive Field since 2014 on Tuesday night to play the Indians and they will do so while remembering their first manager - Don Baylor.
