Income Tax Department Deactivated 11 Lakh PAN Cards ; Know your PAN Status

Govt deactivates 11 lakh PAN cards Here's how to check yours

Further, seeding of Aadhaar will allow the income tax department to weed out any undetected duplicate PANs. "Under the existing system of PAN, only demographic data is captured".

The government has deleted or deactivated 11.4 lakh income tax permanent account numbers (PAN) as individuals were found to have more than one PAN.

The process of detecting and deleting the PAN card took place right after when the Government of India has made the 12-digit biometric Aadhaar or the enrolment ID a must source at the time of application of PAN.

A person can not hold more than one PAN. If you have more than one PAN, you will get a penalty of Rs.10,000 under the Section 272B of the Income Tax Act 1961. According to rules, a person is allotted only PAN card and it is illegal for a person to have multiple PAN cards. It may be noted that Aadhaar-PAN linking makes e-verification of your online tax returns a hassle-free exercise.

On the site Home page at the left side corner services are provided. Soon after filling the details, press on the "Submit" button.

If there is more than one PAN number registered with the same details, you will see a notification regarding the same. Also, Aadhaar had become mandatory in order to avail a PAN card, effective July 1.

A new page will open and there you will be asked to enter your details such as name, religion, mobile number etc.

An OTP will be received to the registered mobile number.

If the PAN Card is active it will show the status under Remarks column as Active else it will display the status under Remarks column as De-activated.

Finally, the government decided to make this move by linking the PAN card with UIDAI.

A pop box with this message is displayed "There are multiple records for this query".

Now you will direct to next page, and you need to provide information such as your name, status, date of birth and mobile number.
