Mosque bombing an act of terrorism, Minnesota governor says

Community support builds for Bloomington mosque

One topic Trump has yet to address: the mosque attack at the Dar Al-Farooq Islamic Center in the Twin Cities suburb of Bloomington, where several people were gathering for prayer.

No injuries were reported after the building was heavily damaged at 5:05 a.m.

Some employees believe the attack was an assassination attempt on the mosque's imam, as the bomb was thrown into his office during a time, early Saturday morning, when he is usually working. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation report, what appears to have been an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) caused explosive damage to the main office. No one was injured. The Minneapolis office has not made a declaration of terrorism but Rick Thornton, the special agent in charge of the Minneapolis office, called the investigation "our top priority". He says investigators have recovered components of the device to figure how it was put together.

"We are saddened at the unprovoked hate crime".

Minnesota hosts the largest Somali community in the United States, roughly 57,000 people, according to the latest USA census figures.

Many social media users took to twitter to question Donald Trump's silence on the attack as well as some mainstream media outlets' reluctance to call it a terrorist attack.

Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton (D) on Sunday visited the center and called the bombing "an act of terrorism".

The Dar Al-Farooq Islamic Center in suburban Minneapolis, like other US mosques, occasionally receives threatening calls and emails.

Another official, Asad Zaman of the Muslim American Society of Minnesota, said this, according to BuzzFeed: "We are wondering why President Trump has not tweeted about this".

"What a bad, dastardly, cowardly, awful act this was", he said.

"We came to this country for the same reason everyone else came here-freedom to worship", mosque member Yasir Abdalrahman told StarTribune.

The mosque's executive director, Mohamed Omar, said Saturday that the explosion was set off "in the direction of the imam's room".

"An attack on a mosque is an attack on a synagogue is an attack on a church", said Curtiss Deyoung, CEO of the Minnesota Council of Churches.

CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad had the following to say about solving the crime: "The swift apprehension and punishment of the perpetrator will send a clear message that attacks on mosques, or on any other American houses of worship, will not be tolerated." .
