Disney, ESPN to launch multi-sport streaming service in 2018

Disney has enjoyed growth at its theme park in Shanghai

"US Netflix members will have access to Disney films on the service through the end of 2019, including all new films that are shown theatrically through the end of 2018".

Yesterday, Disney announced that it had acquired a majority ownership of BAMTech, a company that specializes in streaming sports video, because their goal is launch an ESPN-branded video streaming service early next year.

As a replacement for Netflix, Disney introduces a new platform which will serve as a home for all films of Disney as well as its future movies.

Disney is launching streaming services for both its movies and live sports, shaking up how it interacts with viewers as it navigates a changing media landscape.

The new streaming services are expected to launch in 2018 and 2019 - and will be run by BAMTech, a digital media division founded by Major League Baseball.

These plans probably do not come as a shock to Disney fans as the company already began experimenting with its own streaming service back in 2015, Disney Life.

And just like other streaming services like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon, Disney will also be making a "significant investment" in creating original content exclusively for the platform.

No longer content with being a substitute on the Netflix bench, Disney is going to set off on its own streaming service adventure from 2019 onwards.

Netflix responded to the reports, and explained in a statement that its content would remain on its service for another two years. Big titles coming that year include "Toy Story 4", "Frozen 2", and the live-action "The Lion King", CNBC reported.

Disney's exclusive deal with Netflix was settled in 2012, but had only come into action a year ago.

The ESPN service will be a multi-sport service and, per the announcement, "offer a robust array of sports programming, featuring approximately 10,000 live regional, national, and worldwide games and events a year, including Major League Baseball, National Hockey League, Major League Soccer, Grand Slam tennis, and college sports".
