Jaguars place LT Branden Albert on reserve/retired list

Patriots hold first joint practice with Jaguars

Judging by what has transpired, it certainly seems the world's shortest retirement was a ploy by Albert, a former two-time Pro Bowl selection who is now 32 and far closer to the finish line than the starting gun of his career.

Instead, when Albert retired a week ago, it came with an official statement of thanks to each organization he'd ever played for, including the Jags. That's because he's actually reporting back to training camp even after announcing his abrupt retirement from the National Football League only several days earlier.

Given that Albert is also scheduled to make $8.9 million in 2017, the total sum of bonus money and salary was likely too much to walk away from.

The Jaguars acquired Albert in a trade with the Dolphins in March.

The Jaguars quickly turned to the next man up, Robinson, although the procedural move was to place the veteran on the exempt/left team list, which gave Albert a five-day window to return.

Albert was the 15th overall pick by Kansas City in 2008.

Albert skipped all of the Jaguars' offseason conditioning program and organized team activities because he wanted a new contract, but general manager Dave Caldwell said in April the team was not reworking Albert's deal.

When Albert retired, it was made apparent that he might owe a significant amount of money back to the team he'd abandoned. He had five days to return to the team before going on the reserve/retired list or being released. Albert was working out in the team facility on the players' day off on July 30, and tight end Marcedes Lewis said he spoke with Albert that day and they talked about the upcoming season.
