South Africa's Zuma survives no confidence vote - Here's what happens next

South African President Jacob Zuma could be removed from office following an upcoming no-confidence vote

South Africa's Jacob Zuma on Tuesday survived a no-confidence vote in the parliament against his embattled presidency, despite widespread divisions within the ruling ANC party and growing anger over alleged corruption. "Although there are a lot of ANC MPs (members of parliament) who are not happy, they were never likely to vote en masse for a proposition put forward by the opposition".

South Africa's president Jacob Zuma has survived a parliamentary no-confidence vote, crushing hopes that he would be removed from office.

Earlier this year, the EFF took National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete to court, to force Parliament to discipline Zuma for failing to uphold the Constitution.

- The South African Rand has weakened after President Jacob Zuma's opponents failed to win another vote of no-confidence in him. Both Zuma and the Guptas have dismissed the accusations.

Shapiro feels South Africa has hard task ahead of turning the economy around - irrespective of today's outcome.

Zuma, 75, has been dogged by allegations of corruption during his eight years in office.

A 201-vote majority would be needed to remove him from power, and the ANC holds 249 seats in the 400-seat parliament.

Some ANC MPs have indicated that they would vote with their conscience instead of the party line.

The failure of the no confidence motion is said to strengthen Zuma's position in the party and strengthen the belief that the African National Congress does not have the capacity to recall Zuma, regardless of how many scandals he might be involved in. But it's clear that at least 20 ANC members either broke rank and voted against him or abstained.

The Minister of Police, Fikile Mbalula is on record to have said all his colleagues who vote against Zuma were like suicide bombers.

United Democratic Movement (UDM) leader Bantu Holomisa, who went to the Constitutional Court in a bid to force a secret ballot, said the opposition would ratchet up pressure on the president despite losing the day.

Mr Zuma's tenure as South Africa's president is due to run until 2019 when national elections will be held.

She claimed the motion of no confidence was the work of an "insurrectionist opposition" whose main aim was to "sow seeds of chaos in society to ultimately grab power".

On Tuesday, a jubilant Zuma asserted that the ANC is supported by "the overwhelming majority".
