At least 25 people have died and 65 others are injured after two trains collided in Alexandria, northern Egypt.

The collision involved one train that had been traveling from Cairo and another from Port Said, according to Al-Ahram newspaper.

The worst rail disaster was in 2002 when a train heading to southern Egypt caught fire, killing more than 360 people.

The dead and injured were initially placed on blankets by the sides of the tracks amid farmland on the outskirts of Alexandria.

Ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed told state television that more than a 100 people were also injured in the collision.

In 2012, a collision between a train and school bus on a rail crossing in the town of Manaflut in Upper Egypt killed 51 people, mostly children.

That accident had jolted the government which ordered an investigation and sacked the transport minister and the head of the railway authority. The train sped for miles, with flames engulfing one carriage after another, killing more than 370 people.

The cause of the crash is not yet known.
