Can new Bills WR Jordan Matthews effectively replace Sammy Watkins?

Sammy Watkins of the Buffalo Bills catches

Buffalo also traded former Florida State cornerback Darby to the Philadelphia Eagles for wide receiver Jordan Matthews and a 2018 third-round pick. Matthews has averaged 75 catches, 891 receiving yards and six touchdowns in his first three seasons.

Watkins has been dealing with a foot injury that limited the wide receiver to just eight games previous year after having an operation to fix a broken foot. Gaines, while also loading up with a treasure chest of draft picks for next spring.

Buffalo's overall approach with these trades, and specifically the loss of Watkins, can not sit well with starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor.

Buffalo now owns two selections in the first, second and third rounds of the 2018 draft. Entering his fourth season, the former Vanderbilt wideout has 225 receptions for 2,673 yards and 19 touchdowns under his belt.

He's been hampered by an assortment of injuries and limited to playing just eight games a year ago after having surgery to fix a broken left foot.

Though, when healthy, Watkins is a very unsafe deep threat. Matthews immediately fills the void created by Watkins. In the secondary they are now without Stephon Gilmore, Nickell Robey-Coleman - who was one of the best slot corners in football previous year - and now they just traded Ronald Darby. The young players behind - especially Kupp - should quickly surpass Woods and Austin, who are rotational receivers at best.

Matthews, like Watkins, is eligible for unrestricted free agency after this year.

Gaines was originally a sixth-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Rams. This could work out for the Bills in the long run. The Bills could have done much worse.
