The decomposing body of 82-year-old Isaak Komisarchik was found last week after multiple residents of a Denver apartment complex reported a awful stench.

The decomposing body of an elderly man was pulled from an elevator August 2, almost a month after he got stuck there, according to The Denver Post.

Isaak Komisarchik, 82, was wearing pajamas when he disappeared from his Denver nursing home on July 5.

Pixley said the activation of the elevator's emergency button was recorded electronically twice, although officials never received the call.

One reason for the tragedy may have been the fact that the parking garage where the elevator was located was closed for maintenance.

An investigation into the death by the Denver Police Department revealed that Komisarchik pushed the emergency button twice during an 8-minute span on July 6 but got no response, The Denver Post reported Thursday. The elevator cab where he was found is located in a parking garage that is under renovation construction and not now in active use. His disappearance sparked a large dragnet in which missing persons posters were distributed and Denver firefighters searched five ponds near Woodstream in an attempt to find him.

Tenants say the elevator wasn't working and that few people parked in the garage during summer months.

Pixley said MEI Total Elevator Solutions monitors the elevator for Woodstream Village.

A DailyMail.com request for comment to MEI was not immediately returned.

All elevator cars must have signalling devices including an emergency switch labelled "Alarm" adjacent to the car's operating panel and a phone or intercom labelled "Help" allowing two-way communication with security. The elevator cab where he was found is located in a parking garage that is under renovation construction and not now in active use.

When a Denver firefighter responded, the elevator doors were open.

Greystar Management Services is investigating, the company told CNN in a statement.

An autopsy of Komisarchik has been completed, but the cause and manner of his death are still under investigation, said Steve Castro, a spokesman for the Denver medical examiner. "We are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident with the local authorities". Leading up to the gruesome discovery, residents complained of a foul stench.

Crews last conducted a routine inspection of the elevator in December 2016 and found it to be in good working order, Denver Fire Department spokesman Capt. Greg Pixley told CNN.
