Giroud rescues Arsenal to seal 4-3 opening win vs Leicester

Pep Guardiola is more than happy with how City are shaping up ahead of the trip

The Premier League kicked-off on Friday evening with Arsenal securing a stunning 4-3 win over Leicester City at the Emirates stadium. Arsene Wenger made a decision to go for it and introduced Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud after 67 minutes and the pair both scored in the final seven minutes, keeping the points in north London after a dramatic first game of the season.

Giroud was dropped to the bench in favour of new signing Alexandre Lacazette - who opened the scoring after less than two minutes - but showed again that he can have a big impact as a super sub for the Gunners.

Danny Welbeck was able to score late in the first-half to draw level at 2-2 at the break, but the action was far from done.

A predictable Arsenal implosion followed, with Shinji Okazaki and Jamie Vardy putting Leicester in front.

I suppose we have in a way, with the signing of the France global striker Alexandre Lacazette from the French Ligue 1 club Lyon marking another record breaking spend on one player.

"In my initial analysis from January and through the months I was thinking of four players but I'm not a hard person to work with in spite of if you make it look different", said Mourinho, ahead of United's Premier League opener against West Ham on Sunday.

"We want to win more trophies and do better in the Premier League and we're obviously happy to be back in the Champions League".

He added: "But we prefer to be aggressive without the ball, it's the same as last season".

Giroud offers a different, more physical option for Wenger, but is hoping for a more substantial role at the club.

Signed for £11 million from Charlton Athletic just eight months ago, the 19-year-old winger quickly caught the eye at Everton with some scintillating displays in his eight league appearances last season.

"I enjoyed the players and enjoyed the games and the fans, but it was quite obvious to me that the people running the club were more interested in the value of where the stadium was".

The English Premier League is going to be back with a bang as Arsenal take on Leicester City in the opening match tonight.

The joy did not last long, however.

He said: "Last season we were favourites too and finished 15 points behind and, from my experience as a manager, always in the beginning of the season, the new teams are the toughest ones".

And the mood ebbed and flowed inside the Emirates - with some of the familiar grumblings of discontent evident.

Centre-backs Eric Bailly and Phil Jones return to the Manchester United squad for West Ham's visit to Old Trafford on Sunday, after being suspended for Tuesday's Super Cup defeat by Real.

Wenger looked on anxiously from the dugout, eventually appearing on the touchline when he introduced Ramsey and Giroud after 67 minutes. However, the champions won't let go of their title so easily and with new acquisitions like Alvaro Morata, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Anthony Rudigier to complement players like Eden Hazard, Cesc Fabregas and N'golo Kante, the pensioners will definitely not be written off.
