India heightens alert level after increased tensions with China

Military steps up operational readiness on China border

The standoff had begun in mid-June when Chinese troops tried to construct a road in Doklam, which India and Bhutan both regard as the Bhutanese territory.

Indian and Chinese troops have been locked in a standoff at a remote but strategically important Himalayan plateau near where Tibet, India and Bhutan meet.

Bhutan had pointed out that it had been decided in written agreements in 1988 and 1998 between Bhutan and China that the two sides would agree to maintain peace and tranquility in border areas, pending resolution of their boundary dispute.

There is a rise in the caution level at Doklam where India is in a standoff with China.

The officials declined to give any figure or percentage of increased deployment, saying they can not disclose "operational details".

"The meeting remained inconclusive as the Chinese side insisted on withdrawal of Indian troops from Doklam immediately", a senior Indian official said.

"India has said it hopes to use peaceful ways to solve the problem in the Doklam region, but it did the opposite, including the deployment of more troops near the border", the Global Times editorial quoted Hu as saying. In other areas along the Line of Actual Control, normal military activity and usual patrolling would have gone up in view of the situation in Doklam, reported Bloomberg News.

India has increased its military alert along its eastern border with China, placing around 50,000 soldiers on notice amid an eight-week-long stand-off with Chinese troops.

Official sources in the Bhutanese Government said, "Our position on the border issue of Doklam is very clear".

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Friday held bilateral meeting with her counterpart from Bhutan, Damcho Dorji, on the sidelines of BIMSTEC Foreign Ministers' meet in Kathmandu.

India also conveyed to the Chinese government that the road construction would represent a significant change of status quo with serious security implications for it.
