Lexington mayor says he will remove Confederate statues

Mayor in Kentucky city calls for removal of confederate statues in light of Charlottesville violence

In Lexington, Kentucky, Mayor Jim Gray announced Saturday that his original plans to relocate Confederate statues have been expedited due to this weekend's events.

Yesterday, a white supremacist and Nazi rally in Charlottesville, Virginia meant to protest the removal of Confederate monuments turned violent.

While the statues were not taken down, Rawlings-Blake did add signs in front of the monuments that said the Confederate Monuments were "part of a propaganda campaign of national pro-Confederate organizations to perpetuate the beliefs of white supremacy, falsify history and support segregation and racial intimidation".

"The president needs to condemn the violence and the hatred", Gray said.

The two monuments honor Lexington native John C. Breckinridge, a former United States vice president who became the final war secretary of the Confederacy, and John Hunt Morgan, a Confederate general who raised the "Lexington Rifles" and died in battle.

The state sent troops to both sides of the war, which is remembered there as a true conflict of "brother against brother". They can be found in public parks, courthouses and capitol buildings, among other locations.

"It's the right thing to do", he told the Post.

When asked if he was concerned that his decision might cause white nationalists to protest in Lexington, Gray said the city is very compassionate but "we are are a very disciplined and prepared city".

The city council will vote on a motion to submit the petition on Tuesday, Gray said. And that's why I've recommended to our council that they be placed along our Veterans Park War Memorial Walk together with two monuments to the union effort.
