Deadly Barcelona Van Terror Attack

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence speaks to members of the Chilean American Chamber of Commerce AmCham in Santiago Chile Wednesday Aug. 16 2017. Pence is on an official visit to Chile until Thursday when he will head to Panama during his week-long

RTVE reports the van's driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene on foot.

Leo Varadkar said: "An attack of this nature, targeting the people of Barcelona and visitors enjoying that wonderful city in the height of the tourist season, is both wanton and cowardly and has no place in our society".

The vehicle used in the attack was a rented Fiat van. Police denied earlier media reports that officers had a suspect surrounded in a bar near the crash site.

A suspect is in custody after a van rammed into a crowd in the Las Ramblas tourist neighborhood of Barcelona, Spanish police reported, according to El Pais. It reportedly entered the wide boulevard where it meets the Plaça de Catalunya, then drove towards the port area, meaning it would have covered more than 500 metres.

Video posted on social media showed at least four people sprawled on the sidewalk, some apparently not moving.

La Rambla, sometimes pluralized as "Las Ramblas", is a a street in central Barcelona, popular with both tourists and locals.

Officials urged residents to avoid the area so as not to hinder emergency services' response to the incident.

Catalan emergency services have requested the closure of metro and train stations and the area has been sealed off, according to Reuters.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said he was in contact with authorities, and the priority was to attend to the injured.

He said USA diplomats in Spain are now assisting Americans there and asked those who are safe to notify their friends and families.

A local reporter said gunfire has been heard at the Corte Ingles store in the area.

The tweet said: "There is nobody held up in any bar in the center of Barcelona".

A translation of Macron's tweet says, "All my thoughts and solidarity of France for the victims of the tragic attack in Barcelona".

No terrorist organization, including ISIS, has made a claim of the alleged attack yet. The most deadly was the driver of a tractor-trailer who targeted Bastille Day revelers in the southern French city of Nice in July 2016, killing 86 people. "Support for victims of this terrible attack".

USA secretary of state Rex Tillerson offered help to Spain in the wake of the attack: "Terrorists around the world should know - the United States and our allies are resolved to find you and bring you to justice". Trump tells Spain: "Be tough & strong, we love you!"
