In its latest ballistic missile launch, North Korea halved the range to around 2,700 kilometers, South Korea's defense ministry said Thursday. But despite Pyongyang's propaganda in favour of the ICBM Hwasong-14, the weapon of choice has recently been the intermediate range ballistic missile (IRBM) Hwasong-12.

On Wednesday Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov urged Washington not to use force against North Korea.

In Beijing, North Korea's ally China warned that war is not an option in finding a solution to the North's growing nuclear capabilities.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has made it clear that he is ready to negotiate with North Korea, provided they are ready for nuclear disarmament.

North Korean state media this week also repeated threats to the US Pacific island of Guam, which it called "an advanced base of invasion".
