IRS reportedly working with Mueller on Trump probe

As Russia probe heats up, Trump pushes new baseless smear against Comey

During a May weekend at the president's New Jersey golf club, Trump asked White House aide Stephen Miller to draft a letter outlining a case for Comey's firing, according to two people familiar with the situation.

President Donald Trump drafted a letter to fired FBI Director James Comey outlining why he was getting the boot - indicating his refusal to say publicly that Trump wasn't a target in the agency's Russian Federation probe was "hampering the country", The Wall Street Journal reported.

According to legal experts, the new disclosures lead to the two most intriguing questions in the USA national political discourse: What does the special counsel Robert Mueller have on Donald Trump, and what more is he looking for? The draft letter is allegedly evidence in the investigation into whether Trump obstructed justice by dismissing Comey. Trump told aides at the time he was upset Comey wouldn't publicly say whether or not he was under investigation. And when it comes to examining whether Trump sought to obstruct the FBI's Russian Federation investigation, the president's pattern of behavior and past statements about the probe will likely come back to haunt him. Lindsey Graham of SC wrote to current FBI Director Christopher Wray asking for additional documents related to Mr. Comey's decision to exonerate Hillary Clinton in 2016. But a copy was given to Deputy Attorney-General Rod Rosenstein, who then drafted his own letter.

In her Saturday opening statement on "Justice", host Jeanine Pirro called on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to open a federal criminal investigation into the actions of Hillary Clinton and former FBI Director Jim Comey because Comey began drafting a letter exonerating Clinton from any wrongdoing before the FBI investigation was complete.

The letter, details of which were revealed in subsequent days, focused on Comey's handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton's private email server.

The White House provided conflicting explanations about why Trump fired Comey.

Comey confirms that the FBI is investigating alleged ties between Trump's election campaign team and the Russian government.

Meanwhile, Preet Bharara, the former US attorney for the southern district of New York and now a professor at New York University's law school said, "Hard to assess significance without knowing the actual contents of the draft firing letter and why WH counsel vetoed it". The acting director at the time, Andrew McCabe, later denied that the bureau had lost faith in Comey before his firing. By teaming with the IRS, Mueller might presumably get access to Trump's tax returns, which the president has so far refused to release.

That was said to be in the first letter and was part of the president's rationale for firing Comey.

In an interview with NBC's Lester Holt two days later, however, Trump acknowledged that he was going to fire Comey "regardless" of the recommendations from Rosenstein and Sessions.
