US Open R16 Preview: Four Slam champions on Super Sunday

Scadal: Maria Sharapova 30 has finally broken her silence on last year's failed drugs test as she admitted she felt'so small and just wanted to be treated like a'normal human being

Committed mischief-maker Anastasija Sevastova concocted disorientating spins shredding Maria Sharapova, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 to rally into her second straight US Open quarterfinal.

Sharapova had Sevastova's measure in the first set and looked as if she would carry on where she had left off against the young American Sofia Kenin in the third round, whom she beat in two sets after three-set struggles against the world No2, Simona Halep, and the unseeded Hungarian, Timea Babos.

Having reached his first Grand Slam quarter-final at this summer's French Open, Carreno Busta has been thrust into the limelight here in the absence of some more illustrious names.

"It's been a really great ride in the last week", Sharapova told reporters.

"She played unbelievable throughout the first and second set and I just kept fighting, running every ball, and just stayed there".

Down 2-0 in the third set, the trainer was called out by Sharapova, who said it was the first blister she has ever had. "I still think I have a lot of work to do".

Next on the schedule for Sharapova is the WTA event in Beijing at the end of September as she attempts to build her ranking to ensure direct entry into the 2018 Australian Open.

"At the beginning I was a little bit discouraged, maybe nervous", Carreno Busta said.

While the 30-year-old Russian is an imposing 6-foot-2, Sevastova is a compact 5-foot-7.

Sky Sports Tennis will have all the action from the US Open covered via our website www.skysports.com/tennis with our live blogs and updates throughout the fortnight as the Grand Slam year reaches its climax. It was an incredible opportunity. If she can advance past Stephens, Sevastova could potentially face American Venus Williams in a semifinal. "I would have been like, You're insane", Stephens said.

Sevastova wobbled when she dropped serve on a double fault in the fourth game but quickly regained her composure.

The former world No.1 is embracing the challenge of ending her nine-year grand slam title drought in what would be the longest wait between drinks at tennis's highest level.

In the first set that was not enough to combat the Sharapova forehand.

"I think putting out a schedule where the No. 5 in the world in playing on Court 5, fifth match on after 11 [p.m.], I think that is unacceptable", Wozniacki told reporters after losing her Round of 64 match Wednesday to Ekaterina Makarova.

This was the biggest victory of Kvitova's return to competition after a knife attack by an intruder at her home in the Czech Republic in December. First they controversially gave her a wild card.

From there, Sevastova imposed her game. Navarro, though, held on and scored multiple breaks to take the second set and push it to three.

In a freakish fourth-round contest, the Argentine reeled off the last five games after being treated for a leg issue to oust 16th-seeded Frenchman Lucas Pouille 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 2-6 6-2. I mean, there's no other way to explain it.
