India on a mission to eradicate poverty, says Modi at BRICS

Modi Xi to hold first bilateral meeting tomorrow post Dokalam standoff

"PM Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping to hold (a) bilateral meeting at 12:30pm (10am IST) tomorrow in Xiamen", MEA officials told PTI.

Xiamen [China], September 5:Chinese President Xi Jinping said that the world economy faces growing risks and uncertainties from countries turning inward on trade and emerging markets of developing countries becoming the main engine of world economic growth.

Before the meeting, Modi congratulated Xi on a "very successful" BRICS Summit, China's state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Indian foreign ministry official Preeti Saran told reporters on the sidelines of the summit that wording in the communiqué was a "very important development" and that there was recognition that the world can not have double standards when dealing with militant attacks.

Jaishankar said that issue was not discussed at Tuesday's bilateral between Modi and Xi, and that "the counterterrorism issues were largely taken up in the discussions leading to the BRICS".

The stand-off between Indian and Chinese troops began in June at Doklam, an area disputed by Bhutan and China. In his address, PM Modi said that a coordinated action and cooperation is needed to deal with terrorism.

"Xi stressed that China and India are each other's important neighbours and two important markets and emerging countries", Geng said. There would be regular exchanges and meetings between their foreign ministers and United Nations representatives, he said.

"We reject the declaration [released by member countries] at the BRICS Summit", he said during Tuesday's meeting of the National Assembly's Standing Committee on Defence.

Modi also said India would work with fellow BRICS allies to curb black money and corruption, a stated goal of Xi Jinping.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang added that Xi noted that both countries "should see each other as development opportunities, not threats". The Shi'amen Declaration condemns all terrorist attacks across the world, including BRICS countries. The prime minister said both countries will review developments in bilateral ties with a focus on "extensive" programme of development cooperation and socio-economic assistance India is undertaking in Myanmar.

In a diplomatic win for New Delhi, the Xiamen BRICS declaration issued on Monday named both JeM and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), which are based in Pakistan, along with the Islamic State and Al Qaeda.
