Italian Grand Prix 2017: What did we learn from today's race?

Lewis Hamilton may still be just behind Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel in this year's driver's title race, but he's busy setting records with a 69th career pole in F1 at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza.

Hamilton has now won at Monza for the third time in four years and in front of a crowd of 93,000 mainly diehard Ferrari fans, on the weekend when they were celebrating the 70th anniversary of late founder Enzo Ferrari's first vehicle in 1947.

The only consolation for Vettel came through his ability to secure third place, having started the race from sixth. Red Bull's Max Verstappen also showed impressive form in the wet, placing his Red Bull in second place ahead of team mate Daniel Ricciardo in third.

The last time Hamilton led the standings on his own was at Monza a year ago, with now-retired team mate Nico Rosberg emerging as the eventual champion. "I love the passion of the fans especially the Ferrari fans".

"The last two races have been incredibly strong". This was Hamilton's sixth win of the season. "I don't know if everybody expected him to sign a three-year deal, but it doesn't really change much for me because I plan to extend with Mercedes", he said.

Just after Bottas set the leading time, Hamilton had a faster pace before dropping time in the final sector.

If Sunday's race was a tiresome affair, there was at least plenty of sunshine in marked contrast to the steady rain that drenched fans and delayed qualifying for hours on Saturday.

"For sure, they are giving us a very, very hard time, especially at the moment, but we'll see", the German told reporters.

"To do this here at such a historic circuit, I'm going to have some pasta tonight to celebrate".

"If Valtteri and I were not driving here today, the Ferraris would have won, so we are the villains".

Hamilton held on to the lead at the start and never relinquished it except for during his tyre stop when Bottas assumed the lead after disposing of Williams-Mercedes' Lance Stroll and Force India-Mercedes' Esteban Ocon.

"I came across the line and I didn't know if I had it but it felt a good lap", he said. "Up to then, we need to do our best every single time and then we count the points that we have". "We will do at some point in the second half of the season or towards the end of the year".
