Thomas, Leishman tied atop Dell leaderboard

Thomas and Leishman share third-round lead at Boston

Justin Thomas roared back into the PGA Tour playoff picture with sizzling 63 on Sunday to grab a share of the lead after the third round of the Dell Championship.

The victories keep piling up for Justin Thomas, and all that does is make him want more. This came three weeks after Thomas won his first major at the PGA Championship, the major Spieth needed to complete the career Grand Slam.

That derailed a "dream start" by Spieth, who had three birdies and an eagle over the first four holes.

Casey, who held a three-shot lead after 54 holes in this event previous year but struggled to a closing 73 and was overhauled by Rory McIlroy, carded five birdies and a solitary bogey in his 67.

But Spieth, who finished second at 14 under, shot two over on the back nine, leaving the door open for the US PGA Championship victor. It was all but sealed when Spieth bogeyed the closing par 5 to give Thomas a three-shot lead.

"I felt like I was getting behind", explained Thomas of his first few years as a pro, "but at the same time, I was just starting and I can only do as much as I could do".

Marc Leishman plays his shot from the eighth tee. Though he escaped with a bogey after a 14-foot-8-inch putt found bottom, the groove he had enjoyed over the past 48 hours was fading fast. He won on the back nine at TPC Boston with a sand wedge gouged out of the rough to six feet at the 13th, a gap wedge to four feet at the 15th.

Despite the win, Thomas will still trail Spieth in the FedEx Cup standings heading into the BMW Championship in Chicago.

England's Paul Casey was a shot off the lead after a 67, with Open champion Jordan Spieth, Grayson Murray and Adam Hadwin a shot further back on 10 under.

Woods ruined us, of course, when it comes to expectations, and Spieth sort of ruined what Thomas has done this year.

Thomas understands the recent history of FedEx Cup events is that the Big Names win - McIlroy last year, Spieth the year before. "It's just now we're at the top level you can get, and our competing, it's really cool". Bubba Watson moved into the top 100 at No. 72, making him among eight players who have reached the second round of the playoffs all 11 years of the FedExCup.

Thomas did his part to stay in the game.

SHORT SHOTS: Jon Rahm, the 36-hole leader, didn't have a great weekend, but he hangs in there for a tie for fourth at 12 under.

Thomas steadied himself after his lone bogey on the par-3 11th. He shot 76 that day, and five years later lost to Spieth again, this time in the 2012 NCAA Championship at Riviera, as the Longhorns defeated the Crimson Tide to take the team title. This time, Thomas got the best of him and finished second in the boys' division.

Kevin Chappell bogeyed his last hole and still managed to nudge Charley Hoffman by a fraction of a point to earn the 10th and final automatic spot on the USA team for the Presidents Cup.

Dustin Johnson dropped to third after finishing tied for 18th this week.

The top 70 players on the play-off points list after this event advance to the BMW Championship at Conway Farms Golf Club in IL next week.
