The 17-year-old, who is highly rated at parent club Liverpool, scored on his debut in the 1-0 World Cup qualifying win over Austria.

Wales have provided some of the greats of British football down the years, such as Mark Hughes, Ryan Giggs and Bale.

Wales' striker Ben Woodburn challenges Austria's midfielder Marko Arnautovic during the FIFA World Cup 2018 qualification global football match between Wales and Austria in Cardiff, south Wales, on September 2, 2017.

Wales are now four points behind leaders Serbia and Repulic of Ireland in Group D, meaning a crucial three points are a necessity in Saturday's game against Austria, live on Sky Sports Football.

It was a striking feat from Woodburn and the Cardiff City Stadium thrilled to it.

The 17-year-old Nottingham-born starlet had been courted by England at youth level before committing to Wales, the birthplace of his maternal grandfather.

Liverpool teenager Woodburn was targeted by England after making his Reds debut under Jurgen Klopp last season, but former Anfield hero Ian Rush admits he always knew the young star would stick with Wales.

"I am not saying he is going to be Bale - there is a long way to go - but England have got to be gutted at missing out on him".

"We're in a privileged position because we've spoken to his family. We've seen him coming through". It's all or nothing for us.

"I put him on to add something to us, and he certainly did that".

"But I didn't put him on because I thought he can't go anywhere now". In describing Woodburn's playing strengths, Coleman cited his skill, speed and his balance.

"I remember Bale really, really struggling". It was striking on Saturday that each of Wales's key players rose to the occasion when the moment demanded it. "You can not pick all of them at younger ages", Southgate said.

"They show a lot of early confidence but you can go left or right. Ben knows how much work he has to get through".

"I would never take a gamble on a young player". Coleman cited Wilson, Lee Evans, now starring for Wigan in League One, and Sheffield United's David Brooks as other young talents pushing for senior recognition.

Coleman says Woodburn made his desire to play for Wales known as he progressed through their under-16, under-18 and under-19 teams.

"It's looking good for us, it's good signs, but this is our golden generation; your Joe Allens, your Gareth Bales. Why?"
