Hungary and Slovakia criticize European Union decision on relocations

The EU's highest court today ruled that member states must take in a share of refugees who reach Europe.

Mr Szijjarto called the decision "outrageous and irresponsible" and, echoing the view of Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban, he said it "jeopardises the security and future of all of Europe". However, at the moment were allocated only about 25 thousand people.

Since the original deal with Turkey, the focus has been on the so-called Central Mediterranean route used by many migrants to travel from Libya to Italy.

"Given the tense politics of internal solidarity, it might make more sense for the commission to avoid insisting on the commitment, having made its point", Elizabeth Collett, the European director of the Migration Policy Institute, told The New York Times.

The European Court of Justice said in a statement it had dismissed "the actions brought by Slovakia and Hungary against the provisional mechanism for the mandatory relocation of asylum seekers".

The EU has also refused to pay for a wall Hungary built at its Serbian border, reminding the country of its decision to "reject an offer of concrete solidarity" during the 2015 migrant crisis.

The court's ruling is final and can not be appealed.

In asking the court to annul the deal, Hungary and Slovakia argued at the Court of Justice that there were procedural mistakes, and that quotas were not a suitable response to the migrant crisis.

However, this does not change the position of the Polish government on migration policy'.

Meant to last just two years, the measure adopted by the Council of the European Union calls for other EU member states to help relocate 120,000 migrants in need of global protection.

"The existence of those various adjustment mechanisms shows that the relocation mechanism for which the contested decision provides, taken as a whole, enables account to be taken, in a proportionate manner, of the particular situation of each Member State in this regard", the ruling states.

Brussels launched the relocation scheme in September 2015, the year more than one million migrants arrived in Europe by sea.

It estimates that another 2,800 still need to be relocated from Greece, while Italy counts 7,200 who are eligible so far this year - of which only 4,000 have been registered for relocation.

The council was supported in the challenge by Belgium, Germany, Greece, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Sweden and the European Commission.

Human rights groups have criticized Hungary and Poland for their reluctance to take in any refugees.
