Pakistan rejects BRICS Summit declaration, says defence minister

China skirts Masood Azhar issue after BRICS declaration

Under pressure following BRICS declaration in China that named Pakistan-based terrorist groups like Lashkar-e-taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) for causing violence in the region, Islamabad seems to be finally mulling over restricting the activities of these outfits.

Pakistan on Tuesdaty rejected the BRICS declaration, saying there was no "safe haven" for terrorists on its soil.

To a query about US President Donald Trump's recent comments, the minister said Pakistan faced no foreign aggression.

He said Pakistan's armed forces were doing their duties efficiently as strict surveillance of the country's ground, aerial and naval borders was being conducted.

Commenting on Donald Trump's announcement of U.S. policy toward South Asia, he said unnecessarily alarm bells were being set ringing after United States president's statement.

Dastgir further stated that any wrong step of America can take this region towards instability.

Asif also said Pakistan needs to question whether it had fully implemented its National Action Plan (NAP) on terrorism that was framed after a Taliban attack on an army-run in Peshawar in 2014 killed almost 150 people.

The committee rejected Trump's claim that billions of dollars in aid had been spent on Pakistan, stating that Pakistan's economy had suffered a loss of more than $123 billion due to war against terrorism. "It is better that the Pakistani side eliminate the real safe havens of terrorists instead of putting the blame on us", said Shakib Mustaghni, spokesman for Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa condemned "terrorism in all its forms and manifestations" at the 9th BRICS Summit in China on Monday.

"Pakistan also remains concerned at the rise of extremist ideologies and intolerance in the region encouraging social stratification and systematic targeting of minorities", the statement reads.

According to sources, during the negotiations for the document, India proposed the language on terrorism, which, incidentally, was the same that was agreed during the Heart of Asia Declaration in Amritsar, to which China and Pakistan are both signatories.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited China to attend the three-day BRICS Summit which ended on Tuesday.

"The BRICS declaration suggests an worldwide trend that Pakistan can not afford to ignore".

The five also pledged their opposition to protectionism, a theme increasingly taken up by host Chinese President Xi Jinping as anti-globalisation sentiment in the West poses a threat to China's vast export markets.
