Jose, Katia become hurricanes

Tropical Storm Jose forms in the Atlantic, could be hurricane by Friday

Jose is one of two major hurricanes in the Atlantic basin.

Tropical Storm Jose could reach hurricane strength by late Wednesday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The depression is forecast to strengthen into a tropical storm within the next day or so, and it will receive the name Katia.

Now its maximum winds are 85mph but it is expected to strengthen as it heads northwest during the next 48 hours. Jose could grow into hurricane by Friday, the center says.

You can see Tropical Storm Katia on the left near the Gulf of Mexico, Hurricane Irma in the Caribbean, and Tropical Storm Jose farther east. Hurricane watches were issued on Thursday for the area.

"University of Miami hurricane researcher Brian McNoldy says Irma "could easily be the most costly storm in USA history, which is saying a lot considering what just happened two weeks ago" in Texas".

US President Donald Trump declared emergencies in Florida, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands ahead of Hurricane Irma, while authorities in the Bahamas said they would evacuate six southern islands. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 10 miles (20 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles (75 km).

At 500 a.m. the centre of Tropical Storm Jose was located near latitude 12.5 North, longitude 42.8 West, about 1255 miles (2020 km) east of the Lesser Antilles. With maximum wind speeds of 40 miles per hour, it is now located off the east coast of Mexico.

Katia is expected to threaten Mexico as a large area of dry, sinking air over Texas and Louisiana will keep the storm south of the continental United States for now, AccuWeather said. The Mexican state of Veracruz has a hurricane watch in effect and the storm is now about 185 miles North-Northwest of Veracruz.

CNN's Leyla Santiago, in the capital of San Juan, said there were already power outages as strong winds lashed the island and the center of the storm moved just off the northeast coast.

Florida is now preparing for the possibility of Irma.
