Mexican quake death toll rises to 90 as Oaxaca reports more fatalities

Massive Earthquake Rocks Mexico as the Country Prepares for Hurricane Katia on Gulf Coast

At least one person died when a church collapsed in San Sebastian, Guatemala, according to The Independent.

The man's body was found in a collapsed passageway between city hall offices and a market in the southern city of Juchitan, the city hit hardest by Thursday night's quake. Recovery efforts led to a new death toll of 64 victims. That includes 37 in Juchitan.

Mexicans on Saturday began mourning some of the 67 people killed after a one-two punch from a monster quake and a Gulf Coast hurricane.

More than 4,000 people evacuated parts of Veracruz and neighbouring Puebla states ahead of the storm's arrival. The storm has since dissipated.

President Enrique Pena Nieto described the quake as "the largest registered in our country in at least the past 100 years" - stronger even than a devastating 1985 natural disaster that killed more than 10,000 people in Mexico City.

The State Secretariat of Education reported 792 schools damaged by breaks and extensive cracks.

Two others died in a mudslide in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz after Hurricane Katia hit late Friday.

Civil defence officials said at least 10 died in Chiapas and two others in the Gulf coast state of Tabasco. The mountainous region where the storm has been dumping rain has a history of deadly floods and slides.

A hotel mostly collapsed and many homes were badly damaged in the predominantly indigenous town of 100,000 people, which is tucked into the lush green southern mountains near the coast.

Mr Pena Nieto confirmed that major damage has been caused and that 1 million initially had been without power following the quake, but that electricity had been restored to 800,000 of them.

"Homes made of clay tiles and wood collapsed", said Nataniel Hernandez, a human rights worker living in Tonala, Chiapas, who warned that inclement weather threatened to bring more down.

Hurricane Katia has deteriorated into a soggy tropical depression that is dumping rain over the mountains of east-central Mexico.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said tsunami waves had been detected but on Friday night USA time they confirmed that the "threat had now passed". Lots of damage. Lots of deaths.

One of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded in Mexico toppled hundreds of buildings. A third of the homes in Juchitan, Oaxaca, were also toppled or rendered uninhabitable.

In the town of Juchitan, Oaxaca, hundreds of families spent the night camped in the streets, too scared to go back inside for fear of aftershocks.
