No happy start for Roy Hodgson as Crystal Palace misery continues

Roy Hodgson looks on during a Melbourne City A League training session at City Football Academy

Roy Hodgson has a big job on his hand as at Crystal Palace.

Roy Hodgson reflects on what went wrong for Crystal Palace as the Eagles slumped to their fifth straight league defeat.

Crystal Palace chief Steve Parish has made a bit of a mug of himself after saying everybody should calm down after only a few defeats, with it then emerging that Palace started looking for a new boss before the worldwide break - only two weeks into the season.

CRSYTAL PALACE now have the unwanted honour of being the WORST attacking team to start a Premier League season.

Palace remains bottom of the table, while Southampton has eight points from five games.

"We all realise that we have to do an terrible lot to get that thing that we want".

Hodgson on what lies ahead: "It is painful today and I fear it is going to be painful in some of the moments going forward".

Expectations were high as it was Hodgson's first match as manager, but the Eagles continue to set the negative record.

Hodgson oversaw one of the greatest escapes in Premier League history with Fulham in 2007-08. The 70-year-old is now working at a club operating at a similar level and faced with some of the same challenges that confronted him in the Midlands.

When observers pause to consider which are the best midfields in the Premier League - Chelsea, Tottenham, Manchester United, and Man City will likely appear in some order at the top of every list, and rightly so.

"What as a manager or a coach can you do about that?"

"The major disappointment is that the attitude and the desire of the players that was obvious to us even in the two or three days we've been training didn't get any kind of reward", the Palace boss said.

Steven Davis was a pre-match 14/1 to score the first goal of the game.

He said the anxiety of his players was palpable during the game but he saw an improvement in the second half after they had resorted to booting the ball up to striker Christian Benteke in the first. After the goal, you could see the nerves and the anxiety.

The principles are the same as other managers I have played under but it is the level of detail and how precise he is with his instructions that makes Hodgson different.

The match is also live streamed at HotStar and Palace Player HD Live (Audio Commentary).
