Here's How You Can Help the Victims of Mexico City's Catastrophic Earthquake

Major 7.1 magnitude earthquake strikes Mexico city

The quake hit five miles (eight km) southeast of Atencingo in the state of Puebla at a depth of 32 miles (51 km), USGS said. Officials said at least 22 children were killed when the school building collapsed, dozens of others are missing. The rescue work is still going on as police, firefighters and locals dug through the rubble of collapsed schools, homes and apartment buildings, looking for survivors of the natural disaster.

Another natural disaster struck Mexico on Tuesday afternoon with a 7.1 magnitude at a depth of approximately 50 kilometers.

Mexico's President Enrique Peña Nieto issued a video statement encouraging people to stay clam in the aftermath of the quake.

Mexico City's mayor said that 50 to 60 people had been rescued from the rubble left by the quake in the capital, and efforts are continuing to recover victims.

This is a breaking news story. That's up from the 90 people that died from the quake in Mexico that happened just eleven days ago.

Mexican education officials later said 25 bodies had been recovered from the site, almost all of them children. Almost five million people were without power early on Wednesday.

He added that 36 of those killed were from Mexico City and the rest from regions just to its south and the west.

Hundreds of emergency workers spent the night pulling rubble from the ruins of the grade school with their bare hands under the glare of floodlights.

Many streets in Mexico City have also collapsed, and those that remain intact overflowed with survivors heading back to their homes on foot, as public transportation systems were down.

US President Donald Trump, who has courted controversy with his plans for a border wall with Mexico, tweeted: "God bless the people of Mexico City".

Early Wednesday, the director of Mexico's civil protection agency, Luis Felipe Puente, said on Twitter that 216 people had been killed.
