Former NFL star accused of murder had 'severe' brain disease

Aaron Hernandez Found To Have Had CTE

Baez, the attorney, said Hernandez's brain was examined by Dr. Anne McKee, a professor of pathology and neurology at Boston University.

Bill Belichick handles the football side of the Patriots operation, and he doesn't intend to wade into the medical and legal questions raised in a suit filed against the franchise by Aaron Hernandez's legal team now. McKee is the physician who developed the categories for the condition that researchers found in the brains of 110 of 11 ex-NFL players. Just previous year, a study from the Boston University and the Boston Veterans Affairs found 110 out of 111 brains of deceased National Football League players had CTE. It has been found in athletes including Hall of Fame linebacker Junior Seau and Pro Bowl safety Dave Duerson, both of whom committed suicide.

There was a brief fight over Hernandez's brain following his death last April.

In a press conference at his law firm, Baez spoke in length about the study's findings, which were conducted by Boston University.

MA officials said at that time some tissue, including the brain, was being held until the cause and manner of death were determined.

Lockhart did not have a definitive answer when asked if Hernandez was part of the existing $1 billion CTE settlement.

Investigators found three handwritten notes next to a Bible in the cell, said the prosecutor's office. Days later, he hanged himself in a MA prison.

He said if Hernandez had known about all this, things may have turned out differently.

On the flip side, no one forced Hernandez to play football.

Serving out a life sentence Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Massachusetts, Hernandez committed suicide this past April. In 2017, he was acquitted in a double-homicide case.

Baez said that he regretted not having Hernandez undergo any presumptive testing for CTE while he was alive.
