Iran's top leader dismisses Trump's 'ugly, foolish' remarks

Trump touts peace hopes at Netanyahu meeting

The move would also leave Iran free to resume work on expanding its nuclear capabilities, Rouhani said in the interview, which took place shortly before Trump's first speech to the United Nations General Assembly Tuesday.

Tillerson said Trump has approached the decision of whether to stay in the Iran nuclear deal in the "right way", and has been "very deliberative", listening to a variety of viewpoints.

Macron said he had not given up on convincing U.S. President Donald Trump, who has called the deal "the worst ever", to change his mind.

In remarks clearly directed at Trump's 8-month-old administration, Iranian leader Hassan Rouhani told the UN General Assembly: "It will be a great pity if this agreement were to be destroyed by rogue newcomers to the world of politics".

Critics of the deal, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu - who, unusually for a leader, was in attendance during Trump's speech - say the lifting of some restrictions on Iran's nuclear program starting within a decade pave its path to a nuclear weapon.

"As such, it belongs to the global community in its entirety and not only to one or two countries".

Speaking after the meeting, the European Union's foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, made clear that European parties to the deal aren't interested in revisiting the agreement, which took two years to finalize.

Rouhani told reporters that a decision to leave the agreement would be "condemned by the American people" and that U.S. allies wouldn't support it either, "because breaking the agreement is not something that can be defensible". We'll see what happens. "And we can not abide by an agreement if it provides cover for the eventual construction of a nuclear program".

He says that the true vision and mission of the United Nations and the message to the world will be that we will "fight together, sacrifice together and stand together" for peace, freedom, justice, family for humanity.

MOGHERINI: With the hard times we are living in the world of today with quite a good number of conflicts, crisis and a nuclear threat coming from a different part of the world, the worldwide community can not afford dismantling an agreement that is working and delivering.

She said that with tensions growing between the US and North Korea over the North's nuclear program, the need for the treaty is even greater.

On the Iran deal, Netanyahu could only be pleased at what he heard.

"The world will have lost a great opportunity, but such unfortunate behaviour will never impede Iran's course of progress and advancement, " Rouhani said.

"I don't know whether I could have the same kind of matter of fact discussion with North Korea because we don't know how their means of communication and behavior will be".

USA and European officials involved in the negotiations say that if it had encompassed too many aspects of Iran's behavior, an agreement would never have been reached.

"I declare before you that the Islamic Republic of Iran will not be the first country to violate the agreement", he said.

He plans to address other crisis points, too, such as Iran's nuclear agenda, the instability in Venezuela and the fight against terrorism in Syria and elsewhere. "We definitely do not need to go into another one", she said. And when a mission consistently fails to fulfill a mandate of this council, we should end it, " he said.

The Israeli leader thanked President Donald Trump for the support he has shown the Jewish state.
