Using an August smart lock, users can allow delivery drivers a one-time use code that they utilize to gain entry to the residence.
A large number of customers' immediate response to news that Walmart is testing "in-fridge delivery" was essentially "stay away". With cameras installed in their homes, customers can follow the entire process from beginning to end, and also receive alerts to their smartphones once the process is complete.
Walmart is partnering with Deliv and a "smart locks" company to test a new service that would deliver food products inside customers' homes and refrigerators even when they are not home, the retail giant said in a press release emailed to Retail Dive. In its current iteration, it's catered only to early adopters of smart home technology - which make it fitting for Silicon Valley but less so for the average Walmart shopper in suburban America.
Walmart is already trying to distinguish the service from what people typically associate with the retail giant.
Walmart did not disclose a delivery charge for the service.
Sloan Eddleston, Vice President, Walmart eCommerce Strategy & Business Operations, said Friday in a blog post: "Shopping for groceries can be a hassle for my busy family".
"This may not be for everyone - and certainly not right away - but we want to offer customers the opportunity to participate in tests today and help us shape what commerce will look like in the future".
With the August partnership, Walmart customers both inside and outside cities could take advantage of the service, if they were also August device owners.
This is the first time that Walmart had trialed a service where delivery personnel would directly enter a customer's home, but its subsidiary Jet.com recently struck a deal with smart access provider Latch to improve deliveries in urban markets.
Walmart didn't say how long it will run this latest test, or if it plans to expand it in the future to more cities.
