Raila Odinga: I won August 8 poll but results were doctored

Uhuru's supporters stage protest outside Supreme Court

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta publicly rebuked the country's Supreme Court on Thursday, saying its decision to annul the result of last month's election amounted to a "coup".

In addition to the technology problems, opposition candidate Raila Odinga - set to contest the election against Mr Kenyatta - has said he will not take part in the re-run unless members of the country's electoral commission are replaced.

The IEBC was also hauled over the coals for failing to open up its computer servers, after the opposition alleged the system was hacked and rigged.

The supreme court of Kenya has heavily criticised the body responsible for organising the country's presidential election, casting doubt on its ability to hold a rerun next month after "disturbing" violations in the first poll.

Odinga's NASA party announced at a news conference Wednesday that it will not participate in the October 17 election without major changes to the IEBC.

He also said Kenya will not face a constitutional or political crisis even if a planned re-run of its presidential election is delayed beyond the end of October.

A day before the court delivered its statement, Chief Justice David Maraga said judges on the bench had faced death threats since declaring the election results void, and criticized the police for "ignoring calls to act".

"Our order of scrutiny was a golden opportunity for IEBC to discredit petitioner's claims but they disobeyed the court order".

"The effects and precedent set in that singular judgment by a bench of the court says that a bench can nullify the decision of millions of Kenyans without due regard to evidence".

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Director of Legal and Corporate Affairs has offered to retire days to the repeat presidential election slated for October 26.

The IEBC blamed network failures for missing and delayed tally forms, with some polling stations unable to scan and send the documents on time.

Mr Kenyatta said he had chosen to respect the Supreme Court ruling that nullified his August 8 election victory and opted to return to the ballot.

But Wetang'ula insisted the incumbent is only a caretaker President as on September 1, the Supreme Court ordered a fresh election within 60 days. They said the court should instead have ordered for a recount of the votes.

She said she had conducted an analysis of the 291 forms 34B - 290 constituencies and one from the diaspora - and the disputed forms 34A and found that they were okay.
