Utah's Brigham Young University to Sell Caffeinated Drinks

BYU will now sell caffeinated beverages on campus

Drink dispensers were changed out Thursday morning, Jenkins said, and vending machines have been restocked with both caffeinated and non-caffeinated drinks.

The Mormon-owned school said the change was meant to reflect changes in consumer preferences, as requests for caffeinated soda have become more frequent.

In news that will brighten your Friday, students at Brigham Young University are celebrating today as the school announced that they have ended their ban on selling caffeinated sodas.

In a statement on its website in 2012, the Utah-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints clarified its position on this, stating that "the church does not prohibit the use of caffeine".

Shelby Slade covers community events, issues and stories for the Daily Herald.

Sales of highly caffeinated energy drinks are still banned. "They were the ones in the 1950s to make the decision not to sell caffeinated soft drinks".

BYU has been "caffeine-free" since the 1950's.

Even before this change, there was at least one way to get a Coke on campus.

The campus has a contract with Coca-Cola and will be installing the "freestyle" dispensers around campus.

But the university says it is seeing demand now.

"Did I just buy the first-ever caffeinated Coke Zero Sugar sold in #BYU's Wilkinson Student Center?" he tweeted. "It's been ridiculous that we couldn't have caffeinated soda on campus".

Mormons are encouraged to maintain a healthy lifestyle, but it was a long-held misunderstanding that the faithful were barred from consuming caffeine.

"You youths will never understand the struggle we went through", Whiteley wrote jokingly in a Facebook post. She said some older Mormons in her Salt Lake City congregation still believe all caffeine is prohibited.
