Is North Korea Peddling Dope to Get Around Sanctions?

North Korea claims sanctions threaten the survival of its children

North Korea carried out a massive nuclear test on 3 September which was widely condemned at the UN.

A shallow 3.5-magnitude natural disaster which hit North Korea near the country's nuclear test site Saturday was likely an aftershock from the hermit state's missile test on September 3, a nuclear test ban watchdog and other experts said.

We now see bans on fishery exports and textile exports.

But the North Korean leader said remarks by the "deranged" United States president convinced him he is right to develop weapons for North Korea.

A 3.4 magnitude natural disaster has been detected in North Korea, according to China's state-run Xinhua News Agency.

US analysts now estimate that North Korea may have as many as 60 nuclear weapons, according to a Washington Post report. Incidentally, today's quake was centred near North Korea's nuclear test site.

Experts say the most likely way the North would conduct an atmospheric test over the Pacific is to launch a long-range missile - probably overflying Japan - and have its nuclear warhead detonate in the skies over a remote part of the Pacific.

The U.S. Geological Survey said it could not conclusively confirm whether the quake, which it measured at magnitude 3.5, was man-made or natural.

Tensions have continued to rise around the Korean peninsula since Pyongyang carried out its sixth nuclear test, prompting a new round of United Nations sanctions.

North Korea claims sanctions threaten the survival of its children

Trump dubbed Kim "Rocket Man" in a speech at the United Nations last week in which he threatened to "totally destroy" the North if it attacked the U.S. or its allies.

The website, run by the U.S. -Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies, added the bomb's 250-kiloton yield was close to what it previously determined was the maximum that could be contained by the test site.

In an escalation of the war of words between the United States and North Korea, Trump sent a pre-dawn tweet Friday saying, "Kim Jong Un of North Korea, who is obviously a madman who doesn't mind starving or killing his people, will be tested like never before!"

The quake was detected in an area around Kilju, in north-east North Korea.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the Korean peninsula, and a day after Donald Trump publicly branded Korean leader Kim Jong Un a "rocket man", telling audiences that American "really had no choice" but to confront the Pyongyang regime.

While the USA pushed for a full ban on exports of oil to North Korea ahead of a vote on Resolution 2375, China and Russian Federation objected, supporting limits on exports instead of a full ban.

In a series of meetings this week at the United Nations, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has reiterated to various foreign counterparts that apart from sanctions, the resolutions also call for dialogue to resume and that this needs to happen. "From that time, will implement ban on exporting refined petroleum products to rest of year", he said.

North Korea's state media issued a statement Saturday from the National Peace Committee of Korea describing Trump as "wicked" and "a rabid dog".

On Friday, China announced it would limit its exports of refined petroleum products to North Korea beginning in October 1 to comply with United Nations resolutions.
