Mexican town shakes off shock after quake begins to move forward

The death toll from Mexico's massive quake rose to 319 on Sunday as rescuers scrambled to dig through the remnants of toppled buildings.

Rescue operations aimed at finding living survivors remained active in at least three sites in Mexico City - two apartment buildings and an office building - but hope dimmed every time rescuers had to retreat due to instability of debris.

More than half the dead - 157 - perished in the capital, while another 73 died in the state of Morelos, 45 in Puebla, 13 in Mexico State, six in Guerrero and one in Oaxaca. She has put her nose to work in disasters such as an quake in Ecuador past year, another one in southern Mexico two weeks ago, a landslide in Guatemala in 2015 and a Mexico City gas explosion in 2013.

"Nothing happened to her, but now she has panic attacks", Luna said.

Rescue workers have now wrapped up their efforts at all but five sites in Mexico City, and the chances of pulling any more survivors from the rubble are dim.

The Heat are scheduled to play the Brooklyn Nets in the second of consecutive games for the Nets in Mexico City.

Mexico City's Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera said that nearly 17,000 of the city's inhabitants had received attention at 48 shelters set up to provide food, water and protection to those affected by the quake.

The 7.1-magnitude quake has killed almost 300 people, and rescuers were still digging through some of the 52 buildings that collapsed in Mexico City alone.

"The situation is eating me alive because you can't do anything", he said about sending help to his mother from New York City.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu instructed the IDF to send the delegation after receiving a request for aid from Mexican authorities in the wake of the 7.1 quake that caused several building in Mexico City to collapse on Tuesday night. At least 115 people have been rescued since last week's natural disaster, and many of them remain in hospitals, where they receive treatment in hopes of recovering from severe brain injuries, fractures, and bruises.

Rescuers would yell, "Is anyone in there alive?" but they couldn't hear the group's frantic replies. The death toll from the quake has climbed to 324, according to Luis Felipe Puente, Mexico's civil protection coordinator.

The government's response to Tuesday's quake, which killed 319 people in Mexico City and surrounding states, is under scrutiny ahead of presidential elections next year. Those in the country illegally wish they could travel to help their loved ones cope with the aftermath but are afraid they wouldn't be able to return. "What we don't know is if they are going to be of significant magnitude". But families were hoping against hope to see "miracle" rescues.

It is the moments between those bits of information that torment the families.

"We are trapped", "we are in the fourth floor", "near the emergency exit", "we are four people", the messages said.
