Anthony Weiner sentenced to 21 months for sexting underage girl

Anthony Weiner leaves federal court in New York after pleading guilty to a charge of sending sexual material to a minor

Disgraced US congressman Anthony Weiner will spend almost two years in prison for sexting an underage girl.

"With full knowledge that he was communicating with a real 15-year-old girl, the defendant asked her to engage in sexually explicit conduct via Skype and Snapchat, where her body was on display, and where she was asked to sexually perform for him", prosecutors wrote.

He pleaded guilty in May to transferring obscene material to a minor and agreed not to appeal against a prison sentence of 27 months or less. Prosecutors said he sent a 15-year-old girl porn and got her to take her clothes off and touch herself on Skype.

Weiner, 53, now could find himself on the sex offender list for the remainder of his life.

'The crime I committed was my rock bottom. Weiner's habit led him to resign his House seat in 2011, doomed his 2013 run for mayor, and rocked Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign during the closing days of the race, when FBI agents investigating his contact with the teen came across emails on his laptop between Abedin and Clinton.

Weiner's attorneys sought probation, citing his "remarkable progress".

Global equity markets are mixed - Dow -0.02%, S&P 500 -0.02%, FTSE -0.05%, DAX +0.06%, CAC Closed, Nikkei +0.05%, Shanghai +0.27%. The loonie was at C$1.2254 per dollar CAD=D4 after losing 0.9 percent overnight, when it retreated to a 12-day low of C$1.2338.

The maximum penalty he faced was 10 years.

"This is a serious crime that deserves serious punishment", Judge Cote said.

They urged the judge to put Weiner's claims of a therapeutic awakening in the context of a man who made similar claims after embarrassing, widely publicized interactions with adult women before encountering the teenager online in January 2016. The defense requested that Weiner be held at a prison in Westchester to be closer to his son. They also portrayed her as an instigator, saying she wanted to generate material for a book and possibly influence the presidential election.

Weiner darted to his vehicle after reading his statement without taking questions, and he will report to prison on November 6. The latter was captured in the 2016 documentary, Weiner.

"The laws fully protect her", Cote said.

FBI director James B. Comey informed members of Congress on Friday via a letter that emails had surfaced in a case that "appear to be pertinent to the investigation" of Clinton's use of a private email server. He and Abedin are now going through divorce proceedings. Over the next few hours Weiner exchanged messages with her that ranged "from the mundane to the provocative".
