Sydney flights delayed due to air traffic control problem

This chaos comes as thousands of families prepare to head away on vacation for the school holidays

Wellington Airport's website showed Air New Zealand flights out of Wellington to Auckland, Christchurch and Sydney had been cancelled on Monday night.

Several flights were grounded at Sydney Airport's domestic terminal on Monday over the peak morning travel period, due to a technical fault with an air traffic control system, which has since been resolved.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation's ABC Sydney blamed a system software issue, and said the software in question feeds flight plans into Airservices' radar.

Ground traffic control was hit with a power outage.

As a result, only a limited number of flights were able to land and depart.

Passengers are facing delays of up to three hours while others are having to wait until tomorrow morning to board a flight.

Some flights were also canceled. But during the four hour window air traffic control operators were forced to use slower, manual systems which caused cancellations and long delays.

The problem reportedly relates to the flight planning system, which gives off a radar picture.

Ms Ibbottson said the airlines had not handled the situation well.

This feeds into the radar picture and without it, controllers can not see which plane is which.

Potentially affected travellers should contact their airlines.
