After Uber apology, London mayor welcomes talks

No plans to pull Uber licence in Newport says city council

TfL made an announcement that it will not renew the license of the USA based ride-hailing service in London on September 22, 2017.

Echoing Khosrowshahi, Uber's Head of Cities for the UK Fred Jones joined BBC Radio 4's Today Programme, and said Uber is looking to better understand TfL's concerns, particularly its driver background checks and how it reports serious incidents to the police.

The company's new chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi has written to the London Evening Standard acknowledging that the company "got things wrong along the way" as it expanded.

Khosrowshahi also personally appealed to TfL following the decision to reject the application for a new licence, saying: "We are far from flawless, but we have 40,000 licensed drivers and 3.5 million Londoners depending on us".

A poll carried out among 1,000 Londoners found many were shocked and dismayed at the ruling which came after Transport for London found Uber not to be "a fit and proper" private hire business.

City Council (NCC) has confirmed it has no plans revoke the licence of taxi operator Uber, after Transport for London (TfL) cut its relationship with the firm this week.

"I have every sympathy with Uber drivers and customers affected by this decision but their anger really should be directed at Uber".

Uber now has about 40,000 drivers in London‎, and is used by about 3.5 million customers, but its rise has sparked the most significant backlash to date against a major champion of the "gig economy". A spokesman for TfL later said that the local government body responsible for the transport system in Greater London "are always available and happy to meet at any time".

Khosrowshahi moved to distinguish the company's actions under former top man Travis Kalanick, those under his spell, stating that, "as Uber's new CEO, it's my job to help Uber write its next chapter". Since then it has gone global, operating in more than 630 cities worldwide.

The initial background checks were carried out by a third party but TfL deemed them inadequate following a review.

He also pointed out that, all drivers on the Uber app in NSW "must hold a valid Driver Authorisation (DA) issued by Roads and Maritime Services before they can drive on the app. Drivers must pass a criminal and driving history check as well, as a third-party vehicle inspection to obtain a DA from the RMS". With Sadiq Khan also being the chairman of TfL, it's extremely likely that the next step will be talks between Uber and TfL.

Uber's year has been roiled by one scandal after another; even after Khosrowshahi's hiring, new criminal investigations into previous conduct by the company have emerged.

Thus, when the current license expires on September 30, Uber's operations will be shut down completely.
