Megyn Kelly Launches New Show, Saying She's Done With Politics for Now

Megyn Kelly turns to daytime for shot at'Oprah effect

In the lead-up to her debut on Monday, Kelly and NBC have attempted to soften the sharp-elbowed former Fox News host's image, which was slightly at odds with the new show's position as a space void of politics. Despite Kelly's many, many remarks on Fox News that would lead you to assume the contrary, she came out in support of the National Football League players - and also those who oppose them. Here's a look back at some. It premiered Monday on NBC in the 9 a.m. hour of the "Today" show, proving only that the experiment is far from successful.

"The truth is I am kind of done with politics for now", she stated, citing the show's objective as providing the audience a place to share "a laugh with us, a smile, sometimes a tear, and maybe a little hope to start your day". She interviewed people nervously and so awkwardly that they were cowed into giving monosyllabic answers.

Kelly is finding out very quickly that pandering to liberals will get her nowhere.

Most of the episode devolved into an intentionally meta hall of mirrors, inviting the audience to admire Kelly as much as Kelly admires Kelly - a morning TV show about the birth of a morning TV show.

She joked at the beginning of "Megyn Kelly Today" that "we'll be dissecting the latest tweet from President Trump". I also doubt the new "MSM" viewers are likely to completely buy this new, super soft, version of her any more than MSNBC loyalists took to Trump supporter Greta Van Susteren (who lasted only a few months there).

Kelly brought had four of the six African-American women police chiefs in North Carolina on her nationally televised show Tuesday.

But Kelly's is a unique move, one from a more partisan-skewing outlet, enduring an uncommon the level of scrutiny. They said her only focus in her new segment was to make fans adore Kelly the way she herself adores Kelly.

During a segment with the cast of Will & Grace - including Debra Messing, Will McCormack, Sean Hayes, and Megan Mullally - Kelly invited a superfan of the groundbreaking comedy named Russel Turner to meet his television idols. The show made for a particularly awkward transition after two hours of relatively hard news on Today's flagship broadcast. "If you take those things away, what are you paying for?"

Putting aside its poorly matched host, the nature of the show itself appears to me to be unsustainable.
