United Nations seeks rapid increase in Rohingya aid; Myanmar finds more bodies

Vice President Henry Van Thio addresses the United Nations General Assembly Wednesday September 20

R.P.S. Jaswal, a deputy inspector general of the BSF patrolling a large part of the border in India's eastern state of West Bengal, said his troops were told to use both chilli grenades and stun grenades to push back the Rohingya.

India plans to send a total of 62, ooo units weighing 900 tons.

ICBL said eyewitness accounts, photographic evidence and multiple reports showed antipersonnel mines have been laid near Myanmar's two major land crossings with Bangladesh, resulting in casualties among Rohingya fleeing government attacks on their homes.

Hate speech and misinformation on social media have amplified ethnic tensions in Myanmar's Rakhine state, a USA official said Friday, urging the country's "better angels" to show compassion for Rohingya Muslims who are fleeing violence in droves.

Myanmar government is working for the resettlement of refugees displaced at home and overseas due to conflicts in the country's northern Rakhine state.

Around 429,000 Rohingya have fled Burma, where many of their families lived for generations.

The fact that the call came after three day visit of Murphy to Myanmar is an indication that the United States is ready to play its due role in ending the on-going ethnic cleansing in that country.

The decision came days after Aung San Suu Kyi's televised address, where she invited diplomats to visit the troubled state and speak to Muslim residents who have stayed amid the ongoing exodus of more than 420,000 Rohingyas.

The creation of such "safe areas" would require the approval of the Security Council where China, a supporter of Myanmar's former junta, has veto power.

However, Amnesty International on Friday blamed Myanmar's security forces and vigilantes for fires in Rohingya villages seen on recent satellite images.

Buddhists are the majority in Rakhine state but there are also Hindu and Muslim communities as well as the Rohingya. But the Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Syed Moazzem Ali has clarified that his "PM has given temporary shelter".

Rohingya refugees wait for food distribution organized by the Bangladesh army at the refugee camp of Balukhali near Gumdhum on September 25, 2017.

"Their situation remains desperate, and we risk a dramatic deterioration if aid is not rapidly stepped up", he said.

Bangladesh's four mobile phone providers were threatened with fines if they provide any of the almost 430,000 newly arrived refugees from Myanmar with phone plans while the ban is in force. "It has not been confirmed, but it is a ballpark figure", Mr Robert D. Watkins, UN resident coordinator in Bangladesh, told Reuters in Dhaka.
