DirecTV allowing refunds for NFL Sunday Ticket over national anthem protests

Former NFL player Eddie George enters

This year, however, DirecTV is offering an unprecedented refund for at least some subscribers who are canceling their subscription due to anger over players protesting during the national anthem.

Traditionally, no refunds are handed out for Sunday Ticket once the season begins.

The issue has been magnified by tweets from President Donald Trump, who called the protests "disgraceful" and encouraged fans to boycott the NFL. Although, a spokesman for AT&T - which owns DirecTV - would neither confirm or deny, per Rovell.

DirecTV did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but Alvarado said the policy change happened overnight.

The Wall Street Journal reported that it spoke with DirecTV customer service representatives and customers who received refunds and Bloomberg also confirmed the move with representatives.

"I honestly didn't think I'd get a refund", Hoffman said. Typically, you can't get a refund once the season is underway. Yet other representatives said the policy hadn't changed and that no refunds were allowed for any reason. The price of the package is $280 per season and allows fans to watch out-of-market National Football League games.

But DirecTV parent company AT&T made a decision to offer refunds because of the sensitive nature of the issue surrounding player protests during the national anthem, ESPN's Darren Rovell reports. The NFL has so far been supportive of players' right to express their opinions, but it's unclear whether they'll maintain that position once it starts affecting the sport's revenue.

We contacted DIRECTV via Facebook and Twitter in an attempt to obtain clarification of their purported National Football League cancellation policy, but we were unable to reach anyone in their media relations department.
