Interpol handcuffs PM's hope of ending anti-Israel automatic majority

Palestine Joins Interpol, Despite Israeli Opposition

Interpol announced the inclusion of the "State of Palestine" as well as the Solomon Islands on Twitter and its website Wednesday after a vote by its general assembly in Beijing.

The United States believes the unilateral move to have global bodies recognise Palestinian statehood will thwart efforts to restart the peace process.

While recognizing that moves to gain statehood recognition on the worldwide arena will not resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, APN urges the Israeli government as well as the Trump administration - both vehemently opposed the acceptance of Palestine as a member of Interpol - to focus on the positive.

Maliki told official PA radio on Tuesday that the United States and Israel had been trying to block the Palestinians' efforts to join Interpol this year.

Interpol membership will bring several benefits to Palestinian police.

Israel tried to delay the vote, arguing that Palestine was not a state and therefore ineligible for membership.

"On this joyous occasion, the State of Palestine reiterates its commitment to upholding its obligations and contributing to fighting crime and furthering the rule of law", Mr Maliki said in a statement.

Jaradat also rejected Israel's accusation that the Palestinians could undermine sensitive information available to Interpol members.

"Palestinians see settlement construction intensifying and hear Prime Minister Netanyahu vowing to further intensify it and to never remove any Israeli from West Bank settlements".

Ashrawi made these comments after her meeting with New Zealand Representative to Palestine Barney Riley and his team as well as Palestinian Head of the General Delegation of Palestine to Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Izzat Abdulhadi at the PLO Headquarters in Ramallah.

About 300 Palestinians - majority assailants, Israel says - have also been killed in that period, according to AFP news agency. Whether it's UNESCO, the UN Security Council, the UN Human Rights Council or Interpol - when it comes to the Palestinians' aspiration for statehood, Israel stands no chance. "Therefore, we have the right to apply for membership in global organizations".

The approval vote requires the Palestinians to pay membership dues worth 0.03 percent of the Interpol budget.

Interpol carefully vets red notice requests, which must be based on documented evidence of wrongdoing, such as a domestic arrest warrant.
