Sessions Says Boise State Policy Limits Free Speech

Jeff Sessions

More than a hundred people gathered on the steps in front of the Georgetown Law Center here on Tuesday in anticipation of an appearance by Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

During his remarks, Sessions stated that his Department of Justice intends to push back against this increasingly warped idea of free speech on campuses. The university is about the search for truth, not the imposition of truth by a government censor.

Sessions comments come just a day after he accused National Football League players who protest before games of "demeaning" the flag by not standing and saluting during the anthem. "These players, with all the assets that they have, can express their political views other than, in fact, denigrating the symbols of our nation - our nation that provides the freedom to speak and act".

"The freedom of every individual player is paramount under the Constitution". He then added, "it's not a contradiction".

Attorney General Jeff Sessions had some things to say today about the intense national debate over protest and free speech.

'But it is transforming into an echo chamber of political correctness and homogeneous thought, a shelter for fragile egos'.

Sessions, who heads the Justice Department that is prosecuting a woman for laughing at him during a congressional hearing, slammed "ridiculous" college students Wednesday for "suffocating" free speech on their campuses.

In March, former U.S. Senator Sessions announced that he would remove himself from any Justice Department investigation into the election, after officials discovered he had conversations with a Russian ambassador while advising the Trump campaign.

In a statment to Buzzfeed, Georgetown Law spokesperson Tanya Weinberg confirmed that a group of students not on the event guest list had initially RSVP'd, only to be told later they could not attend Sessions' speech.

The Trump administration thrust itself into the midst of the battle over free speech on college campuses Tuesday, siding with activists in a case challenging a Georgia school's strict limits on where and how students can express themselves. But in at least one row, students sat silently in black with duct tape over their mouths.

"He basically told everyone in the room to go tell Sessions to get moving" and do a better job, one person said. "It has always been my understanding that the courageous men and women who fought and died for our country did so to ensure that we could live in a fair and free society, which includes the right to speak out in protest. We need open robust debate on college campuses". Sessions also asserted that universities cancelling speeches over potential violence or controversy have created "a cottage industry of protestors who have quickly learned that school administrators will capitulate to their demands".

"We acknowledge our colleague's right to invite Attorney General Sessions to speak on campus", the letter reads.

The Georgetown chapter of Young Democratic Socialists of America tweeted that they'll attend the protest.

Sessions' speech, according to the school's website, was organized by its Center for the Constitution, led by high-profile professor Randy Barnett, who is known for his libertarian positions.

"We pay a ton of tuition", she said.
