Top Hizbul Mujahideen commander Abdul Qayoom Najar killed in Baramulla

Abdul Qayoom Najar Abdul Qayoom Najar killed Hizbul Mujahideen commander Hizbul Mujahideen hizbul commander killed kashmir Baramulla

Abdul Qayoom Najar who was "killed in a gunbattle with forces near the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector" was not only the longest surviving Kashmiri militant but also one of the smartest, a senior police officer has said.

Najar was active in Kashmir for the last seventeen years and was allegedly involved in over 50 killings, J&K police said.

"Najar was killed as security forces foiled an infiltration bid near Zorawar post in Lachipora area along the LoC on Tuesday morning", Baramulla Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Imtiyaz Hussain told reporters.

The outfit that claimed the attacks, Lashkar-e-Islam, (police describes it as a splinter group of Hizbul Mujahideen) which hardly had any presence in the Valley.

Reportedly, the 43-year-old militant commander of Hizbul-Mujahideen was sent to the valley on the orders of the United Jihad Council chief, Salahuddin, to take over the reins of Hizbul-Mujahideen after the underground outfit suffered a major setback in Kashmir with two of its top commander, Javid in north Kashmir and Yasin Yatoo in south Kashmir, killed in different encounters with security forces in August alone. His return was also necessitated because of wiping out of HM from North Kashmir.

He said Najar briefly fell out with HM/Hurriyat leadership in 2015 when he orchestrated multiple attacks on mobile towers in Sopore.

The rise of Najar as a militant commander accused of killing a Hurriyat activist along with five others, many of them linked to Telecom companies, in the tense summer of 2015 in north Kashmir, remains a mysterious like much of his life.

Qayoom was most wanted with a reward on his head for his involvement in several attacks on civilians as well as political leaders in Sopore and Handwara of Kashmir. "Armed intruders retreated", an Indian Army official said. He was arrested in 1992 but later released.

"Najar started his career as a terrorist with the killing of Hizb commander Abdul Majid Dar in 2003", he said. He had joined militancy at an early age of 16. He was already heading a huge network in Sopore, Palhallan and in areas of Bandipora and Baramulla. "Najar was recalled to the base camp at Muzaffarabad in PoK to sort out differences", a source said. That way it is a big relief to us and a big relief to all victims of his activities.

The unprovoked and indiscriminate firing by Pakistan Army in Kashmir has effectively broken down the almost fifteen-year-old Ceasefire Agreement (CFA), the two countries agreed to in 2003.
