Erdogan, Putin to meet in Turkey this week on Iraq, Syria

Erdoğan and Putin

Putin will make a one-day working trip to Ankara on Thursday, the Kremlin and the Turkish presidency said, following a telephone call between the two men.

Peskov reminded reporters that Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit Turkey tomorrow to meet with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Moscow sides with Syrian President Bashar Assad while Turkey has supported his foes since the start of the Syrian conflict six years ago.

Ankara and Moscow have been on opposing sides of the over six year civil war in Syria, with Russian Federation the key backer of President Bashar al-Assad and Turkey backing rebels seeking his ouster.

"In addition, the parties are co-operating in ensuring regional security, including in Syria", Peskov said, adding that during the visit of Putin to Ankara "the clocks on all these issues will be checked".

Turkey and Russian Federation support opposing sides of the conflict in Syria, but both have been parties to a trilateral agreement with Iran to set up de-escalation zones in the Arab country to help reduce the fighting.

Speaking at a news conference after talks in Ankara with Erdogan, Putin did not set out his view on the referendum.

Turkey has fiercely opposed the region's plans for independence as Ankara has deep-rooted problems with its Kurdish militants along its borders with Iraq and Syria.

Erdogan underlined the need to prevent "even more serious mistakes", adding that "it's important that the global community sides with Iraq's territorial integrity and political unity".

Ankara and Moscow went through their worst crisis in ties since the end of the Cold War when the Turkish air force shot down a Russian war plane over Syria in November 2015.
