Michelle Williams in talks to feature in Venom

Michelle Williams Venom

It is rumoured that Michelle Williams has been enlisted to play the female lead in "Venom" that stars Tom Hardy as the Spider-Man supervillain-turned-antihero. According to the trade, there's no concrete details yet on her character, though she's rumored to be playing "a district attorney and possibly Hardy's love interest". Sony didn't comment, but sources said talks are happening.

Scott Rosenberg ("Jumanji") and Jeff Pinkner ("The Dark Tower") will write the script for "Venom", with Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach producing the movie, along with Amy Pascal.

Variety reports Michelle Williams, who was recently nominated for an Oscar for her role in Manchester by the Sea, is in talks to star in an unnamed role.

Sony had planned to release a "Sinister Six" movie featuring Venom but made the decision to start off with a Venom adventure.

Venom is the name of an alien "suit" called a symbiote that first attached itself to Peter Parker's Spider-Man in 1984, before splitting off and finding a new host in Eddie Brock, who relished its malicious streak.

Sony execs and Fleischer had been meeting with multiple actresses for the part for the past month, with production beginning next month. As a result, you have a creature with all of Venom's powers, but none of Eddie Brock's (admittedly limited) morals and scruples.

Confusingly, the film will have no connection to Tom Holland's Spider-Man and the Marvel Cinematic Universe he exists in.

Venom previously appeared on the big screen, played by Topher Grace in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3. Venom is reportedly meant to be an R-rated, sci-fi and horror take on the comic book villain.

Production is expected to begin this fall on Sony's solo Venom movie, as the film is now scheduled to hit theaters October 5, 2018.
